Seeds/Living, Non-Living

Another part of our science unit involved planting seeds in a baggie (to make a greenhouse) and watch it grow.  We talked about how seeds are not-living, but they have the potential to be living if they have sun, water, soil and warm temperatures.  Below is their observation book.  It's essentially a large (12x18) construction paper folded into fourths and then turned into a little book.  We have foldables that we have put inside to keep our information/data together.

The yellow foldable holds a small book about the parts of a plant.  The accordian book is for the observations and for drawing the seeds as they grow.

This is the paper that is inside the 1/2 fold of the book.  It is for more detailed observations!

Camouflage

In science, we have been talking about animal adaptations.  One of those adaptations, and one that students really love learning about is camouflage!  I did some searching and found this awesome art project on Kids Artist and had to try it!  The 3rd graders LOVED it, and the best part is, they will remember what camouflage is!!

Plant Sale for Africa

For the past 3 years, we have been a doing plant sale to raise money for malaria nets in Africa.  We have raised over $1700 which is about 170 bed nets for families!  We start buy collecting tin cans throughout the year.  Then in April, we plant seeds: basil, oregano, cilantro, zinnias, sunflowers etc.  The students put rocks, dirt and seeds in the cans and then nurture them until they grow into plants (hopefully). 

We sell them over two days for $2-5 per can.  It has been a great project, and one that myself and my ex-colleague are proud to have initiated.  I will be posting a packet soon with more details. 

Freebie: Spider Unit

Creepy spiders become not so creepy after students study them.  This is a 6 page unit to help little ones ease into learning about spiders.  There is a word search, a form for a spider hunt, a poster about spiders and a dice and draw game.  Your class will love this introductory unit on spiders.  You can download it free at my TPT store.

Bird Unit

This is part of unit I made for our bird unit.  The students spend about a month learning about birds. They get to go birdwatching, make nests with sticks and mud, and learn about the diversity of birds.    They love it!  You can purchase this 13 packet in my store at TPT.
